Holding Labor to account in Budget Estimates

Budget Estimates is where the government is meant to answer questions about how it spends your money. Of course, we know WA Labor can’t even spell the word ‘transparency’, so our WA Liberal team has been hard at work to get the answers WA taxpayers deserve.

Here's some of what our team exposed:

Flammable cladding: Seven years after the State Government's own audit identified combustible cladding on major hospitals and schools, the work still hasn't been done. Estimates this week confirmed remediation at Perth Children's Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital hasn't even gone to tender, and won't be finished until 2029. Six public schools flagged in the audit remain unfunded entirely. Yet Labor found the time and money to fully fund and commence building a racetrack within 12 months. Every dollar a government spends reflects its priorities - and the safety of our hospitals and schools clearly isn't near the top of Labor's list.

Regional courts: More than 20 regional courthouses have been forced to cease operations because Labor failed to provide adequate security. Both the Police Commissioner and Labor's own representative for the Attorney-General couldn't — or wouldn't — say when these courts will reopen. Regional communities are being left without basic justice services, and Labor won't even commit to a date.

Regional airfares: From 1 July, Labor is hiking regional airfares by up to 30% during school holidays and peak periods - while subsidising flights for interstate soccer fans to come to Perth. One department is making it more expensive for regional West Australians to travel their own state; another is spending your money to give tourists a better deal. When asked to justify it, all Labor offered was word salad.

This is what we're up against: a government that lacks transparency, takes your money and refuses to account for it.
