Anthony Albanese has let Australians down.

Let me be direct with you, because Anthony Albanese certainly hasn't been.

Before the 2019 election, Labor went to the Australian people with a plan to wind back negative gearing and cut the capital gains tax discount. They lost.

The Australian people rejected it.

Fast forward to the 2025 election. What did Anthony Albanese do?

He stood up in front of the cameras and promised time and again he would not touch negative gearing or capital gains tax if elected. He said it plainly. He said it repeatedly. He gave Australians his word.

He lied. 

Albanese is doing exactly what he promised he would not do.

He is whacking Australians with changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing that he never had a mandate to introduce.

This is not just bad policy. It is a fundamental breach of trust between a Prime Minister and the Australian people.

And it is exactly why every effort the Coalition makes between now and the next election must be directed toward one goal: ending this terrible Labor Government.

Let's be clear about what these changes mean for Australians.

Many older Australians built their wealth with the benefit of the capital gains tax discount. 

They saved, they invested, they built something for their families and that discount was part of the deal. Now Labor wants to pull up the ladder and tell younger Australians they won't get the same chance.

This is nothing more than class warfare dressed up in economic language.

Labor's changes will mean Australia has one of the highest effective capital gains tax rates in the developed world.

A tax on saving. A tax on investment. A tax on the aspiration of every Australian who is trying to get ahead, build a nest egg, or secure a future for their children.

And the changes to negative gearing? They will make the housing crisis worse, not better.

When you reduce the incentives for Australians to invest in rental properties, you reduce supply. 

When you reduce supply, rents go up. This is not complicated. Labor knows this. They just don't care or they think you won't notice.

You deserve better than a government that breaks its word and then expects you to foot the bill.

Let me give you the full picture of what this Labor Government is doing to the finances of ordinary Australians.

The Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, has admitted it himself: compared to the Coalition, this government will hit Australians with $280 billion in higher taxes over the next decade. Two hundred and eighty billion dollars. That is not a rounding error. That is a deliberate political choice to take more of what you earn, save, invest and build.

Labor's broken-promise taxes on housing, small business and savings will raise $80 billion.

And their secret inflation tax will quietly squeeze another $200 billion out of working Australians by letting inflation drag them into higher tax brackets without ever putting it to a vote. Bracket creep by stealth.

Labor voted eleven times in the Parliament against lower taxes. Eleven times. They talk about cost of living at every press conference, every doorstop, every focus group-tested speech.

Then they walk into the Parliament and vote to make Australians pay more. Judge them not by what they say. Judge them by what they do.

If you think Labor's toxic taxes are bad now, wait until the Greens get their hands on them.

We already know how this story ends. When Labor and the Greens do deals behind closed doors, Australians always pay more. The Greens do not want to reward hard work. They want to punish it. They do not want more Australians to get ahead. They want government to take more of what you earn, save, invest and build.

Labor opens the door. The Greens walk through it. And hardworking Australians get the bill.

Anthony Albanese promised to lead a government that does not seek to divide, that does not seek to have wedges. Now he is cutting deals with an extreme party that believes every problem can be solved with a new tax. The promises mean nothing. Australians pay the price.

I want to be honest with you about where the Coalition is right now. We know trust can be lost in an instant and takes time to rebuild.

But we are doing the work, listening, developing real solutions, and building a plan that deserves the trust of the Australian people.

That plan starts with our Tax Back Guarantee, an automatic tax cut, every year, that gets bigger as time goes on.

Not a one-off. Not a political stunt. A structural fix that stops inflation from quietly pushing workers into higher tax brackets when they are not a single dollar better off.

For a typical worker, that means around $250 back in the first year, $500 in the second, $750 in the third, and $1,000 in the fourth. Compare that to Labor, which will only give you $250 by year four. The choice could not be clearer.

Our plan also includes a Migration and Housing Pledge that caps migration based on how many homes Australia actually builds, a commonsense fix to a crisis Labor has made worse.

We will put Australians first by ensuring welfare payments and the NDIS are reserved for Australian citizens.

We will back any energy technology that can deliver affordable, reliable power to Australian families, not an ideological agenda that sends your power bills through the roof to subsidise green rent-seekers.

We will give small businesses the ability to immediately write off assets up to $50,000, so they can invest, grow and employ.

And we will build Australia's security by committing to a genuine National Security Strategy and at least three per cent of GDP on defence, because a weak Australia is not a safe Australia.

We are also committed to a Future Generations Fund that banks resource windfalls to pay down debt and build the infrastructure this country needs, rather than Labor's approach of borrowing and spending until the budget is in deficit for a decade and national debt smashes through one trillion dollars.

I will not pretend the road ahead is easy. Australians are frustrated, and that frustration extends to the political system as a whole. Our job is to earn back that trust, day by day, policy by policy, argument by argument.

But I can tell you this: the Coalition is united, we are focused, and we are absolutely determined to hold this dishonest, incompetent Labor Government to account at every turn.

Anthony Albanese has let Australians down. He promised one thing and did another.

He has overseen the biggest fall in living standards in the developed world. He has let spending run out of control and left a trillion dollars of debt for our children to pay.

That is not good enough. And the Coalition will not let him get away with it.

Every day, we are working to make the case for a better Australia, fairer, freer and more prosperous.

An Australia that rewards hard work. That respects the aspirations of every family trying to get ahead. That does not punish you for saving and investing and building something of your own.
