The WA Liberal Party mourns the passing of Greg Weller, who served the Party in a variety of capacities across Canning, Durack and O’Connor divisions for over 50 years.

Greg not only made a lasting impact on the WA Liberal Party, but also on the vital issue of regional road safety.

For almost 20 years, Greg was a key part of the Livestock Transport Association, which spearheaded road safety campaigns throughout the 1990’s successfully advocating for safer WA roads.

The legacy of his endeavours is reflected in things such as overtaking lanes on Great Northern Highway at Bindoon Hill, the ‘prepare to stop’ signals at traffic lights along Perth’s highways and the truck ‘rest-a-beds’ on Bedfordale Hill, Great Eastern Hwy and Toodyay Rd.

Greg and his late wife Fran were a formidable team, together building a Liberal Party that was proudly committed to sound governance and standing up for rural and regional WA. Fran stood as part of the Liberal Party ticket for the Agricultural Region in 1993 and again in 1996 when we had a combined ticket with the Nationals.

Greg and Fran were proud to have made their contribution to support strong Liberal Governments led by statesman such as John Howard and Peter Costello, and Richard Court. In recognition of their service, they were both presented with the Federal Meritorious Service Award in 2013 by the then Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

Whether at the WA Liberal Party’s State Council, the Rural and Regional Committee or as Vice President of the vast O’Connor Division, Greg’s passion and commitment to straight talking was an example to many.

His ability to use anecdotes to illustrate his point made Greg Weller not merely a persuasive advocate, but an entertaining one.

Greg continued as a staunch supporter of the Liberal Party in his final years as a member of the Waroona Branch.

In 2024, he served as a selection committee delegate for Canning, Murray-Wellington and South West Region.  The latter was an all-day meeting in Bunbury that Greg attended and actively took part in, despite having fallen over on his lawn earlier that day.

Greg Weller passed away on 11 November at the age of 86.

We extend our profound sympathies to his children, Bernard and Jenny, his grandchildren and other family and friends.
